Thought Dwight Howard's signature on that "I will not opt out" pledge would end the controversy in Orlando for a while?
You thought wrong.
The NBA's most compelling drama took another turn for the absurd today. The Magic are getting ready to play the Knicks on national television. And Orlando coach Stan Van Gundy chose this morning's shoot-around as an opportunity to tell the assembled media that Howard wants him fired.
And that his source on that particular tidbit of information is team management.
It's increasingly difficult to see how the Magic can settle this situation without losing both Van Gundy and Howard. That's a real shame; one is an excellent coach, the other is an outstanding player. The two complement each other a lot better than either is willing to admit at this point, but it seems their relationship cannot be saved.
In retrospect, maybe convincing Howard to stay one more year was a mistake. Another season worth of "should he stay or should he go" will only do more long-term damage to the franchise.
- Stan Van Gundy and Dwight Howard's relationship crumbles for all the world to see.
