Team USA has been plagued by slow starts during the London Olympics. Until yesterday, that is. Mike Krzyzewski's team exploded out of the blocks like Usain Bolt, scoring 49 points in the first quarter on their way to a 156-73 drubbing of Nigeria.
The 156-point tally was the most ever scored by an American men's team in Olympic competition. Carmelo Anthony set a new U.S. Olympic single-game records for scoring (37 points) and three-pointers made (10) and attempted (12). Even more remarkably, he did so in under 15 minutes of playing time.
The old U.S. single-game scoring record was 31 points, set by Stephon Marbury in the 2004 Olympic quarterfinal game against Spain.
Anthony and his teammates were white-hot from three from the opening tip. They opened the game on a 13-0 run and hit 11 of their first 14 attempts from long range. As a team, they shot a ridiculous 63.0 percent from three and 71.1 percent overall.
Team USA is now 3-0 in the group stage and has already clinched a spot in the knockout round. They'll face Lithuania (1-2) on Saturday.
