Lamar Odom is returning to Los Angeles, via a four-way trade between the Mavericks, Jazz, Clippers and Rockets.
The highlights:
- To the Clippers: Lamar Odom (from Dallas)
- To the Jazz: Mo Williams (from the Clippers), draft rights to Shan Foster (from the Mavs)
- To the Mavs: Tadija Dragicevic (from the Jazz), cash (from the Rockets)
- To the Rockets: Furkan Aldemir (from the Clippers)
Who benefits?
Odom could be a very nice addition for the Clippers. He is, after all, just one season removed from winning Sixth Man of the Year honors with the Lakers. But he was traded to the Mavs before the 2011-12 season and never fit in there; he left the team after the trade deadline and didn't play for the last two months of the season.
A 6-10 forward with point guard skills, Odom is generally considered an NBA three, but is probably at his best playing power forward in smaller lineups. There isn't a four in the league that can defend Odom off the dribble, and that mismatch creates lots of opportunities for him to score or create for teammates.
It will be interesting to see if the Clippers use Odom in the starting lineup or bring him off the bench to spell Blake Griffin and/or DeAndre Jordan.
Williams is a solid veteran point guard and very good outside shooter who may be used to back up Devin Harris and as a scorer off the bench in Utah.
Aldemir is a 6-10 combo forward from Turkey that was selected by the Clippers in the second round of last week's NBA Draft. It's not clear whether or not he'll play in the United States this season. Dragicevic and Foster were both second-round picks in 2008 that are playing in Europe and likely to stay there; for the Mavs and Rockets, this deal was more about clearing cap space.
