Tennessee Lady Vols coach Pat Summitt has more wins on her resume than any other basketball coach in Division I history. But she won't be adding to that list; the legendary coach is stepping down from her position.
Summitt will stay with the Lady Vol program as "Head Coach Emeritus," assisting the coaching staff with on-campus recruiting and as "a personal mentor to the players."
Her list of career accomplishments is nothing short of remarkable:
- A win/loss record of 1,098 and 208 (.841 winning percentage)
- Eight National Championships
- A perfect 39-0 season in 1998
- 22 Final Four appearances
Summitt was also the coach of the 1984 Olympic Women's basketball team, winning gold at the Los Angeles games. She was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 2000.
Summitt announced before last season that she has been diagnosed with early-onset dementia, and that she planned to continue coaching as long as the condition allowed. She will be succeeded by Holly Warlick, an assistant coach that has spent the last 27 years on the bench with the Lady Vols.
