As far as I'm concerned, today is the worst day on the American sports calendar. There's no baseball. Football, basketball and hockey are out of season. And ESPN will broadcast the annual ESPY Awards... a show worth watching only if you're really interested in what sort of ridiculous get-up Giants closer Brian Wilson might wear. (The spandex tuxedo was a winner.)
Of course, the Worldwide Leader's celebration of itself does have a positive side... the event - and associated auction - raise a ton of money for the V Foundation for Cancer Research. Founded by North Carolina State coach and broadcaster Jim Valvano - whose legendary "Never give up" speech continues to be the all-time best moment of any ESPY broadcast - the V Foundation raises millions annually for cancer research and screening programs.
