The Fray opened the broadcast of Monday's NCAA championship game with what was, quite possibly, the worst rendition of The Star Spangled Banner I've ever heard.
Granted, our national anthem is not an easy song to sing. And performing in front of a massive crowd and even larger television audience in a cavernous football stadium has to be daunting. But... well... just listen to this mess:
The Fray's dreadful national anthem performance at the NCAA championship (video).
"Make the song your own" is good advice on American Idol. Not so much when we're talking about The Star Spangled Banner. Unless you're Jimi Hendrix, you play that song straight. Besides, I think the guitarist was playing some other song entirely.
Stick to sappy ballads intended for the Gray's Anatomy soundtrack, guys. That's what you're good at.
And while we're on the topic... the game was played in New Orleans, one of the music capitals of America. Why was a soft-rock band from Denver performing the national anthem?
