Auburn guard Varez Ward is at the center of an FBI investigation into point-shaving, Charles Robinson of Yahoo! Sports is reporting.
According to the report, federal investigators are looking into at least two of Auburn's games this season - a 68-50 loss to Alabama on February 7, and a 56-53 loss to Arkansas on January 25.
Ward has not been with the team since mid-February due to an unspecified violation of team rules.
What is Point Shaving?
The "original sin" of college basketball, point-shaving is the act of purposely holding down the score of a given game in order to impact bets made on that game.
The most notorious point shaving scandal in college basketball - and probably all of American sports history - centered around players at City College of New York (CCNY) in the early 50s. By the time it played out, the so-called CCNY scandal resulted in the arrests of dozens of players at several schools, including LIU, NYU, Kentucky, Bradley, Manhattan College and Toledo.
