Pat Summitt to receive Medal of Freedom

Tennessee Lady Vols' coach emeritus Pat Summitt is among the luminaries that will receive the Medal of Freedom from President Obama today.

The Medal of Freedom is the highest honor the United States can convey upon a civilian. Other honorees include Bob Dylan, retired Supreme Court Justice John Paul Stevens, former Secretary of State Madeleine Albright and author Toni Morrison.

Summitt is the winningest coach in Division I college basketball history - men's or women's. She won eight national titles as coach of the Lady Vols, and coached the women's national team to Olympic gold in 1984. She was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 2000.

She announced last year that she is fighting early-onset dementia, and stepped down as head coach last month.
