Syracuse Center to Miss NCAA Tournament

Syracuse center Fab Melo - the team's leading rebounder and shot-blocker - will not participate in the NCAA Tournament due to an unspecified eligibility issue, the school announced today.

The top seed in the East region, Syracuse is scheduled to open tournament play on Thursday afternoon in Pittsburgh, when they'll face sixteen-seed UNC Asheville.

The university - citing Federal privacy guidelines - did not specify the reason Melo has been declared ineligible. He missed three games earlier this season due to an academic problem.

Without their seven-footer in the middle, Syracuse's trademark 2-3 zone may look a lot less imposing. His absence may also exacerbate the team's biggest weakness - rebounding. The Orange ranked 129th on the boards among Division I teams.
