To Be Determined

The NBA regular season ends tonight. The playoffs start Saturday. And that's more or less all we know for sure at this point.

Eastern Conference

  • The Chicago Bulls and Miami Heat are the top two seeds in the East, but their opponents are to be determined. The Knicks and Sixers are currently seventh and eighth in the conference with identical records - New York has a tiebreaker advantage. If the Knicks win tonight in Charlotte - and they should, as the Bobcats haven't won a game since St. Patrick's Day - they'll lock up the seven seed and play Miami in the first round. If the Knicks lose and the Sixers win, Philly plays Miami and the Knicks will face the Bulls.
  • The East's three seed Pacers will face Orlando; the Magic locked up the six seed by beating Charlotte last night.
  • The four/five series in the East will feature the Hawks and Celtics, but we don't yet know where it will be played. A Hawks win or Celtics loss on Thursday would give Atlanta the home-court edge, even though Boston is guaranteed a seed no lower than fourth after winning the Atlantic Division.

Western Conference

  • The Spurs are locked into the top seed and will play Utah in the first round. The Spurs still have a chance to lock up the top overall seed, but getting all their key guys ready for the postseason seems a bigger priority at this point; Tim Duncan, Tony Parker and Manu Ginobili won't play in their finale.
  • Second-seeded Oklahoma City will play either Denver or the defending champion Dallas Mavericks. If Denver beats Minnesota tonight, they'll lock up the six seed and a first-round date with the Lakers.
  • The Clippers and Grizzlies will be the four and five seeds, but we won't know which is which until Memphis plays Orlando tonight. With a win, the Grizzlies will get the four and home-court advantage in the first round.

Other Stories to Watch

  • Charlotte has been out of the playoff mix since... late January or so. But they still have plenty to play for. Lose tonight's game against the Knicks, and they'll finish the season with a winning percentage of .106... which would be the worst such mark in NBA history.
  • Kobe Bryant still has a chance to pass Kevin Durant for the scoring title... but he'll need to drop 38 against the Kings to do it.
