Temple to Join Big East

Temple could join the Big East conference for football as soon as next season, ESPN.com's Joe Schad is reporting. The Big East needs an eighth team to fill out the conference 2012 football schedule due to the loss of West Virginia to the Big 12. The Owls played football in the Big East from 1991-2004; their basketball program competes in the Atlantic 10.It is not clear whether the Owls will join the Big East for all sports. Villanova has reportedly resisted the idea of having another Philadelphia school as a full member of the Big East, but it seems fairly clear that basketball-only schools don't wield much power in these conference realignment discussions. In 2013, Central Florida, Houston, Memphis and SMU are set to join the Big East in all sports. Boise State and San Diego State will join for football only that year. Navy is set to play football in the Big East starting in 2015.
